Everything you need to know about the 2022 Formula Challenge Series

Esports

The 2022 edition of the Formula Challenge Series starts on Monday (16th May). A companion series to the Formula Pro Series, Formula Challenge is open to all sim racers who owns rFactor 2 and the content that’s needed to participate.

The top overall finishers in this series will be sent into a shootout with teams that finish outside the Top 10 in Formula Pro. The Top 3 drivers from Formula Challenge plus three other nominated drivers will compete for those Formula Pro spots.

Similar to the Formula Pro Series, the Formula Challenge Series will be utilising a modified version of the Formula Pro open-wheel single-seater. They’ll have push-to-pass and that naturally aspired V10 power plant, but these Challenge cars will only have 600bhp as compared to the normal 800bhp.

FORMULA CHALLENGE RACE EVENT FORMAT

Every other week, alternating with the Formula Pro Series, the Challenge Series will have its own format. Even though drivers had to qualify their way in through the competition system beforehand, they’ll qualify once again for 15 minutes, with each driver getting six laps to better their time.

Once the field is set, the race will last for 45 minutes. Drivers are not required to make any pit stops, but the pitlane will be open and can be utilised.

Every higher split will get 25 more points than the next as a participation point bonus. A better explanation would be that the top split would get 25 more points than the second split, which would get 25 more points than the third split, and so on and so forth.

WHO AND WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Races will be split up among the 60 drivers that put down a lap for qualifying. Each split will have up to 26 cars per split. The final line-up for the broadcasted top split will be decided on the night of the race dependent on which competitors turn up to race.

Some of the bigger names who put down times for this first race event include Risto Kappet from R8G Esports, Luca D’Amelio, who’s had recent success in the Le Mans Virtual Cup, Timotej Andonovski, who’s seen success in the GT Pro Series, and a representing Ferrari Esports driver during the Le Mans Virtual Series, Jordy Zwiers.

In the booth will be a potent combination of Justin Sutton and Lewis McGlade. All of the action will be live on the Traxion.GG YouTube channel, as well as on the Traxion.GG Twitch channel and on Facebook via the Traxion.GG, rFactor 2 and Motorsport Games pages.

You can catch it live on Monday nights starting at 20:00 CEST / 19:00 BST / 14:00 EDT / 11:00 PDT.
